New Skills Online helps nonprofit startups and mission-driven organizations strengthen the abilities required to plan effectively, qualify for funding, deliver programs with excellence, measure results, and sustain impact.
Our work is guided by the R.A.T.E.S. Principles—Response-ability, Account-ability, Technical-ability, Evaluation-ability, and Sustain-ability—developed in 2009 by Dr. Margaret Jamal to support organizations building real readiness, not just polished proposals.
The framework emerged from community-based work after Dr. Jamal relocated to Chicago from Denver and saw a recurring challenge: funding opportunities existed, but too few grassroots organizations were positioned to qualify.
The gap was not passion—it was documented capacity and operational readiness. R.A.T.E.S. was developed to help organizations close that gap through clear standards, shared language, and practical development.
Today, New Skills Online provides training, tools, and guidance that help organizations build stronger infrastructure and communicate readiness in ways that align with common funder expectations.
